Introducing our Residents and Curator

Snehta Residency’s new season kicks off with the collaboration of three wonderful and inspiring female artists, Iza Koczanowska, Minsun Kim and Ruby Reding! Our residents will have the opportunity to work with Snehta and this period’s curator Eleni Riga, for three months to finish off with a group show at the end of November.

Iza Koczanowska, living and working in Warsaw, is an interdisciplinary artist and space designer creating projects on the intersection of performance, photography, installation, space and digital art. She explores the influence of space on the behavior of organisms, the process of their adaptation to new spaces and any related dysfunctions in the time of climate catastrophe and technological acceleration. Her works are often immersive exhibitions, online environments or interpretations of objects from an anti-utopian apocalyptic-fantastic world in a sketchy, collage-like, remixed aesthetic and often temporary form.

Iza is a graduate of the Faculty of Intermedia and Interior Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, also studied at École Nationale Supérieure d'arts de Paris Cergy as part of the Erasmus exchange programme. She presented her works in many underground and experimental spaces, such as: Galeria Pamoja, Pracownia Duży Pokój or Ada Puławska, but also showed her works abroad and during residencies in, among others in Sesama, Indonesia. She took part in collective exhibitions in institutes like Teatr Powszechny in Warsaw or Łaźnia Nowa in Gdańsk.

Minsun Kim is a Korean artist living in London with an academic background in fibre art and textiles. She completed her B.A. in South Korea and subsequently attended the Royal College of Art for her M.A in London. Following this, she concentrated her work on silk screen printing, weaving, and installation art, and tried establishing textile works as soft sculptures.

By getting inspired by abstract subjects and the process of developing them through more research and drawing, she creates her first prototype samples. She is seeking to express textile through formative experiments that move away from flat textiles, most of her works aim to reveal the characteristics of crafting and soft sculpture inherent in textiles. Harmonising textiles with the characteristics of crafting, the work guides toward the potential of soft sculpture in using textiles.

Ruby Reding is an artist and writer based in London. Ruby studied Literature at Cambridge University, holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths and is currently completing the Conditions Studio programme. Her recent work makes a constellation of alternate knowledges, empathetic dialogues with sites, artefacts, natural and unnatural sounds, mysticism, warped temporalities, softness and the textures and slippages in language. Working along the parallel lines of writing, moving image and sculpture, Ruby’s works operate within the history of artist film and poetry while seeking to create interconnected and immersive environments.

For the past two years, she has experimented with collaborative filmmaking and ways of working with other artists to create films from poetic texts and research on topics around the climate crisis, colonial and feminist histories. Ruby utilises her experiences living in different counties and as a writer to consider how forgotten histories, the phonetics of words and biographies of lost writers colour our environments differently and create incisions in language. Her projects have been shown internationally in galleries, publications and residencies including: TACO! in London, SÎM Gallery in Reykjavik, NTS Radio, Word For/Word Journal and Tears in the Fence.

Curator for September - November 2022

Eleni Riga is an independent curator, writer and cultural producer. She lives and works in Athens. Her practice focuses on the intersection of feminism and ecology and the politics of care. Recently, she worked as an assistant curator for the solo show of Georgia Sagri, Case_L at Friart, Fribourg in Switzerland. Previously, she worked at the Adult & Academics Programs at MoMA, she directed the Contemporary Art Department of Eleusis 2023 European Capital of Culture and she was curatorial assistant at documenta 14. Αs an independent curator she has collaborated with institutions in Europe and the U.S.A. She holds a master’s degree in curatorial studies from Panthéon – Sorbonne University in Paris and a bachelor in Communication, Media and Culture from Panteion University in Athens. Recently, she completed her curatorial studies at Curatorlab at Konstfack University in Stockholm.

Παρουσίαση των Φιλοξενούμενων Καλλιτεχνών και Επιμελήτριας

Η νέα season για το Snehta Residency ξεκινά με την συνεργασία με τρεις φιλόδοξες και πολλά υποσχόμενες γυναίκες καλλιτέχνιδες, Iza Koczanowska, Minsun Kim και Ruby Reding. Οι φιλοξενούμενες καλλιτέχνιδες θα έχουν την δυνατότητα να συνεργαστούν με την ομάδα του Snehta και την επιμελήτρια αυτής της περιόδου Ελένη Ρήγα, για τρεις μήνες καταλήγοντας στην παρουσίαση του έργου τους στα τέλη Νοεμβρίου.

Η Iza Koczanowska, η οποία μεγάλωσε, ζει και εργάζεται στη Βαρσοβία, Πολωνία, είναι διαμεσική καλλιτέχνιδα και σχεδιάστρια χώρου (space designer). Τα έργα της κινούνται μεταξύ των πεδίων του performance, της φωτογραφίας, των εγκαταστάσεων, ψηφιακής τέχνης, καθώς και της τέχνης χώρου (space art). Αντικείμενο της έρευνάς της είναι η επιρροή του χώρου στη συμπεριφορά των ζωντανών οργανισμών, η διαδικασία προσαρμογής αυτών σε νέους χώρους, καθώς και σχετικές δυσλειτουργίες που προκύπτουν σε μία εποχή κλιματικής αλλαγής και τεχνολογικής επιτάχυνσης. Τα έργα της είναι συχνά εκθέσεις περιβαλλόντων εμβυθιση, ψηφιακά περιβάλλοντα ή αποδόσεις αντικειμένων από ένα αντι-ουτοπικό αποκαλυπτικό-φαντασιακό κόσμο ακολουθώντας μία φόρμα σκίτσου, κολάζ με αισθητικά στοιχεία, η οποία είναι συχνά εφήμερη.

Η Iza αποφοίτησε από το Faculty of Intermedia and Interior Design στην Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Κρακοβίας, έχοντας επίσης φοιτήσει στο École Nationale Supérieure d'arts de Paris Cergy στο πλαίσιο προγράμματος Εράσμους. Έχει παρουσιάσει τη δουλεία της σε πληθώρα underground και πειραματικών χώρων, όπως: Galeria Pamoja, Pracownia Duży Pokój, Ada Puławska, καθώς και σε χώρους του εξωτερικού αλλά και κατά τη διάρκεια καλλιτεχνικών residencies, μεταξύ άλλων και στο Sesama στην Ινδονησία. Έχει πάρει μέρος σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις σε ινστιτούτα όπως στο Teatr Powszechny στη Βαρσοβία και το Łaźnia Nowa στη Gdańsk.

Η Minsun Kim είναι καλλιτέχνιδα από την Κορέα με έδρα το Λονδίνο, η οποία έχει ακαδημαϊκό υπόβαθρο στη κλωστουφαντουργική τέχνη και textiles. Ολοκλήρωσε το προπτυχιακό της στη Νότια Κορέα και στη συνέχεια το μεταπτυχιακό της στο Royal College of Art του Λονδίνου.

Εμπνεόμενη από αφηρημένα θέματα και τη διαδικασία ανάπτυξής τους μέσα από περισσότερη έρευνα και σχέδιο, δημιουργεί τα πρώτα πρωτότυπα δείγματα. Επιδιώκει να εκφράσει την υφαντουργία μέσα από διαμορφωτικούς πειραματισμούς που απομακρύνονται από τα επίπεδα υφάσματα, τα περισσότερα έργα της στοχεύουν να αποκαλύψουν τα χαρακτηριστικά της χειροτεχνίας και της μαλακής γλυπτικής (soft sculptures) που ενυπάρχουν στα υφάσματα. Τα έργα της Minsun συνεπώς στοχεύουν στο να αναδείξουν χειροτεχνικά και γλυπτικά τα έμφυτα χαρακτηριστικά του υφάσματος (textile).

Η Ruby Reding είναι εικαστικός και συγγραφέας με βάση το Λονδίνο. Η Ruby σπούδασε Λογοτεχνία στο Cambridge University, έχει MA στη Θεωρία της Σύγχρονης Τέχνης από το Goldsmiths και επι του παρόντος ολοκληρώνει το Conditions Studio πρόγραμμα. Μέσω του πρόσφατου έργου της δημιουργεί έναν συνδιασμό εναλλακτκής πληροφορίας, διαλόγους ενδυναίσθησης με τόπους, αντικείμενα, φυσικούς και αφύσικους ήχους, με χαρακτηριστικά μυστικισμού, διαστραβλωμένης χρονικότητας, υφές και τις ολισθήσεις της γλώσσας. Δουλεύοντας παράλληλα με την γραφή, τη κινούμενη εικόνα και τη γλυπτική, τα έργα της Ruby λειτουργούν μέσα στην ιστορία της καλλιτεχνικής ταινίας και της ποίησης, ενώ επιδιώκει να δημιουργήσει περιβάλλοντα διασύνδεσης και εμβύθισης.

Τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια πειραματίζεται με τη συνεργατική κινηματογράφηση και τους τρόπους συνεργασίας με άλλους καλλιτέχνες για τη δημιουργία ταινιών από ποιητικά κείμενα και έρευνες σε θέματα γύρω από την κλιματική κρίση, την αποικιακή και τη φεμινιστική ιστορία. Η Ruby αξιοποιεί τις εμπειρίες της από τη διαμονή της σε διαφορετικές χώρες για να εξετάσει πώς οι ξεχασμένες ιστορίες, η φωνητική των λέξεων και οι βιογραφίες χαμένων συγγραφέων χρωματίζουν διαφορετικά το περιβάλλον μας και δημιουργούν τομές στη γλώσσα. Τα έργα της έχουν παρουσιαστεί παγκοσμίως σε γκαλερί, εκδόσεις, καθώς και residencies συμπεριλαμβανομένου των TACO! το Λονδίνο, SÎM Gallery στο Ρέικιαβικ, NTS Radio, Word For/Word Journal και Tears in the Fence.

Η Ελένη Ρήγα είναι ανεξάρτητη επιμελήτρια και πολιτιστική παραγωγός. Ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα. Η πρακτική της εστιάζει στη διασταύρωση οικολογίας και φεμινισμού και στην πολιτική της μέριμνας (care). Πρόσφατα, εργάστηκε ως βοηθός επιμέλειας για τη μονογραφική έκθεση της Γεωργίας Σαγρή, Case_L, στην Kunsthalle Friart, στο Fribourg της Ελβετίας. Στο παρελθόν, εργάστηκε στο τμήμα Εκπαίδευσης του Μουσείου Μοντέρνας Τέχνης της Νέας Υόρκης, διετέλεσε χρέη διευθύντριας στο τμήμα Σύγχρονης Τέχνης της Ελευσίνας 2023 και βοηθού επιμέλειας στη documenta 14 στην Αθήνα και στο Κάσελ. Ως ανεξάρτητη επιμελήτρια έχει συνεργαστεί με οργανισμούς τέχνης στην Ευρώπη και στην Αμερική. Είναι απόφοιτος του τμήματος Επιστήμες και Τεχνικές των Εκθέσεων της Σορβόννης στο Παρίσι και του τμήματος Επικοινωνίας, Μέσων και Πολιτισμού του Παντείου Πανεπιστημίου στην Αθήνα. Πρόσφατα, ολοκλήρωσε τις επιμελητικές σπουδές της στο πρόγραμμα επιμέλειας Curatorlab στο πανεπιστήμιο Konstfack στη Στοκχόλμη.
