Vitiated air as a metaphor for a stagnant society, narrow-minded, clinging to its established convictions and unwilling to allow in anything new. It may be fiction, but at the same time quite real, up until now.
Could it be that the mobility of ideas -thus of the people-, is at least one of the steps towards the solution of this fundamental problem? Regarding cultural professionals, what are the reasons for them to commute and the profits in relation to the production process and the creative output? The need for knowledge, the possibility of an “international” career, an access to foreign markets, new collaborations and a wider audience are certainly not the sole motives for artists to reach beyond their local environment.
The benefits that one may gain simply by associating with various societies are evident first and foremost in one's personality. The mobility of people promotes an understanding of human nature, of the great diversity of human beings and of our own personalities. It liberates us from social norms and smoothes out the ways we interact with each other. When it comes to artists, it is inevitable that these changes manifest themselves in their work as well.
In a time when artistic production has significantly increased, the uniqueness of a work of art is essential. An honest manifestation of an artist's personality into their work, inspiration through newfound stimuli and a genuine concern about public matters in an international level, are perhaps the elements that could create the possibility for one of those artworks which make you happy when you happen to be in their presence.
The three artists participating in the exhibition carry their own personality traits, which are also reflected in their work. Nevertheless, from the very first moment of their interaction -however brief- with the Greek reality, they integrate into their research elements of the local society and history. It’s a process which is not necessarily deliberate, but rather a spontaneous reaction to new stimuli.
For Su Wang it is the light and the mediterranean landscape that completely change her subject area and the way she uses colour in her paintings. For Yelena Zhelezov it is the techniques of the ancient Greek drama, which she parallels with the methods people use to construct their fictitious self-images and project them into society. For Bjargey Ólafsdóttir it is the elements that constitute the daily life of people, which may have apparent differences, but share a common origin.
Short bios:
Bjargey Ólafsdóttir lives and works in Reykjavík. She studied photography, painting and mixed media at Iceland Academy of the Arts, Reykjavík and Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki and she studied Screenwriting and Directing in Binger Filmlab, Amsterdam. Bjargey Ólafsdóttir’s practice is not confined to a single medium as each of her projects calls for a different tool: photography, film, sound art, performance and drawing. Her works are narrative by nature, telling stories of bored female dentists, rock stars in Japan and women that can see into the future and beyond. Her works are sometimes scary, yet beautiful and always brimming with humor and playfulness. In her work, Bjargey Ólafsdóttir plays with our preconceptions about what we see, about the mediums of film and photography, questioning what is real and what is fiction.
Bjargey Ólafsdóttir work has been shown internationally in numerous exhibitions and Festivals, such as : The Reykjavík Art Museum, The Reykjavík Museum of Photography, Kunstverein Munich, KunstWerke Berlin,Germany, Galeria Traschi, Santiago Chile, Moderna Museet Stockholm, Sweden, The Moore Space Miami, USA.
Yelena Zhelezov works in sculpture, video, sound and painting. Her practice focuses on examining hyper-consumerism and physicality in the digital era. She frequently employs found and biodegradable objects to give texture and materiality to web-based experiences – reflecting on the evolving domains of what is public vs private, and what is history vs fiction. She is based in Los Angeles and is a co-host of @centeredsubjectpodcast, a weekly podcast on culture, tech and human behavior.
Su Wang moved to Athens in September, Athens is a new plant for her. The recent project is based on things she researched and happened beside her everyday. It is about different time in Athens and something may seems to be nonsense in her eyes because of the cultural differences.
At the same time it combined with her previous interest which is breaking the time limits. So the spectator could see different time combined in one landscape.
Galini Lazani is a curator and museologist based in Athens. Since 2014 she has been the curator and general manager of one of the oldest and most renowned contemporary art galleries in Athens, the Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center.
She has curated group and solo exhibitions in Athens and Tokyo, including in her curatorial projects important Greek artists such as Costas Coulentianos, Jannis Kounellis, George Lappas, Takis.
During her college years in Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences she has collaborated with Athinais Cultural Center as a curator within the framework of an international conference on ancient theater (2010) and with the Foundation of the Hellenic World as a museum educator (2012). She has also collaborated as an assistant curator for the Athens School of Fine Arts alumni exhibition (2015) and a curator for the Ornerakis School of Applied Arts alumni exhibitions (2010, 2015, 2016).

Ο βαλτωμένος αέρας ως μεταφορά μιας βαλτωμένης κοινωνίας, μίας κοινωνίας κλειστής, προσκολλημένης στις εγκαθιδρυμένες πεποιθήσεις της, που δεν είναι πρόθυμη να δεχτεί τίποτα το καινούριο. Μυθοπλασία μεν, πραγματικότητα δε, μέχρι και σήμερα.
Η κινητικότητα των ιδεών -δηλαδή στην πραγματικότητα των φορέων τους, των ανθρώπων- είναι μήπως τότε έστω ένα από τα βήματα προς τη λύση του θεμελιώδους αυτού προβλήματος; Όσον αφορά τους απασχολούμενους στον χώρο του πολιτισμού ποιοι είναι οι λόγοι και ποια τα οφέλη που αποκομίζουν ως προς την παραγωγική διαδικασία και το δημιουργικό αποτέλεσμα; Η ανάγκη της ενημέρωσης, η πιθανότητα μίας “διεθνούς”, χωρίς σύνορα, καριέρας, η πρόσβαση σε ξένες αγορές, οι καινούριες συνεργασίες, το ευρύτερο κοινό, δεν είναι σίγουρα τα μοναδικά κίνητρα για να κινηθεί κανείς πέρα από την εγχώρια δράση.
Τα οφέλη που μπορεί κάποιος να αποκτήσει απλώς και μόνο από την συναναστροφή με διαφορετικές κοινωνίες γίνονται εμφανή πρώτα από όλα στην προσωπικότητα του. Η κινητικότητα των ανθρώπων προάγει την κατανόηση της ανθρώπινης ιδιοσυγκρασίας, της διαφορετικότητας κάθε ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης, του ίδιου μας του εαυτού. Μας απελευθερώνει από τις κοινωνικές νόρμες και εξομαλύνει τους τρόπους αλληλεπίδρασής μεταξύ μας. Όταν πρόκειται για εικαστικούς, οι αλλαγές αυτές δεν μπορεί παρά να γίνουν αντιληπτές και στο έργο τους.
Σε μία εποχή όπου η καλλιτεχνική παραγωγή έχει φτάσει σε πολύ υψηλούς αριθμούς, η μοναδικότητα ενός έργου τέχνης είναι αναγκαία. Η ειλικρινής έκφραση της προσωπικότητας ενός εικαστικού στο έργο του, η έμπνευση μέσω νέων ερεθισμάτων και το πραγματικό ενδιαφέρον για τα -παγκόσμια πλέον- κοινά είναι ίσως ο συνδυασμός που μπορεί να προσφέρει την πιθανότητα της δημιουργίας ενός από εκείνα τα έργα τέχνης που τις στιγμές της θέασή τους σε κάνουν να νιώθεις ευτυχισμένος.
Οι τρεις εικαστικοί που παρουσιάζουν το έργο τους στην παρούσα έκθεση κουβαλούν μέσα τους την δική τους προσωπικότητα, που αποτυπώνεται και στο έργο τους. Από την πρώτη στιγμή όμως της, έστω και σύντομης, ένταξής τους στην ελληνική καθημερινότητα, αφομοιώνουν στην έρευνά τους στοιχεία που προσλαμβάνουν από την τοπική κοινωνία και ιστορία, χωρίς αυτό να αποτελεί απαραίτητα μία συνειδητή τους επιλογή, αλλά περισσότερο μία αυθόρμητη αντίδραση στα νέα ερεθίσματα.
Για την Su Wang είναι το φως και το μεσογειακό τοπίο, τα οποία αλλάζουν εντελώς την θεματική της και τον τρόπο χρήσης του χρώματος στην ζωγραφικής της. Για την Yelena Zhelezov είναι το αρχαίο ελληνικό δράμα, στις τεχνικές του οποίου βρίσκει παραλληλία με τον τρόπο που οι άνθρωποι κατασκευάζουν την πλασματική εικόνα του εαυτού τους που προβάλουν στην κοινωνία. Για την Bjargey Ólafsdóttir είναι τα στοιχεία που συνθέτουν την καθημερινότητα ενός λαού, που μπορεί να έχουν εμφανείς διαφορές, κρύβουν όμως μία κοινή καταβολή.
