Short Lived Settlements

In physics and in chemistry the process of settling is defined as one by which particulates settle to the bottom of a liquid and form a sediment. Such sediments are naturally occurring materials which develop because of the centrifugal motion of different elements and the force of gravity that pulls them to the bottom of any containing vessel. 

Becky Campbell’s artworks can be considered as sediments that have occurred through her short-lived settlement in Athens. The City’s historical, geographical and social characteristics have been filtered by her visual and aesthetic sensors, delivering material constructions that bare the markings of her experiences. More specifically Campbell focuses on collecting and categorising materials which are available in abundance in Athens and imperceptible because of the City’s everyday life. These materials are transformed by Campbell in three-dimensional evidences that stretch the materials’ inherent aesthetic and formal qualities in order to express her own reflections of Athens. Her various constructions can be contextualised as personal marks on and interactions with materials that have the potential to uncover her multifaceted aesthetical and social investigations of the city. 

The Snehta apartment is the space where the sediment of Campbell’s found objects and constructions settle. Throughout this exhibition, the viewer is invited to collect and decode these constructions in order to interpret Campbell’s Athenian references tactile reading of Athens.

Snehta Residency

Snehta stands for the name of the city of Athens but written in reverse. The title symbolically suggests that resident artists are to rediscover Athens and furthermore Greece by translating, reading it reversely or alternatively. The Residency aims at creating a dialogue with the social, material, aesthetic and architectural infrastructure of the City by taking into account historical, psycho-geographical, contemporary and traditional factors that have formed it.
