Urban Tectonics suggests an exploration of the underlying forces and conditions which inform visual evidence abundant in everyday life. Geologists study the motions of drifting tectonic plates in order to gain insight into earth’s outermost deformations. This tectonic state of fluidity is comparable to Athens’s current urban landscape and social environment whose constantly changing appearances are shaped by invisible and fluctuating social factors - politics and economics, individual and collective memories - all of which take place within a network of complex international connections.
Within the context of Urban Tectonics, Snehta residents Elliott Burns and Boris Lafargue engage in an exploration of urban landscape morphology while considering underlying factors and conditions that influence the landscape’s existing and future formations. Accepting the notion that the City of Athens is currently in a state of aesthetical and social flux, Burns and Lafargue present visual interpretations of the City in an attempt to provide further insight to contemporary urban experience.
Based in the Snehta apartment in Kypseli, the two artists transform their Athenian residential premises into a personal space of visual and sculptural projection. Drawing on everyday imagery and materials, the setting accommodates works which exhibit two distinctly personal readings of the urban landscape of Athens, its multi-layered history, its potentially transcending cultural borders and its position as a cultural fulcrum.
Elliott Burns presents a series of works which investigate the structures of landscape manipulation in contemporary Eastern and Western cultures. Drawing on research he began in 2012 in Thailand, and continued in Athens, he uses photographic images, aluminium engravings and sculptural arrangements of reclaimed materials as a means to trigger visual comparisons between Eastern and Western imagery, suggesting the transcending nature of embedded cultural perceptions.
Boris Lafargue explores Athens through his notion of politics, which assumes a poetic inclination on matters of political and social interest. By adopting the City as an open-air playground he uses his aesthetical criteria in order to interpret fleeting observances of everyday life. Installations, sculptures and drawings are created as critical visual platforms which encourage poetic and political contemplation.
Biographies
Elliott Burns was born in Stevenage, UK in 1989, and currently lives and works in Hertfordshire, UK. He studied Drawing & Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, UK. Exhibitions include: The Road Less Travelled, House Gallery, London, UK (2012) and Inselaffen, Whitespace, Edinburgh, UK (2011); residencies: Park in Progress, Nottingham, UK and ComPeung, Thailand (both 2012).
Boris Lafargue, born Boulogne sur mer, France, 1984, lives and works between France, Greece and Estonia. He has studied at the College of Art, Tourcoing, and Lille University, France; Athens School of Fine Art, Greece. Exhibitions include: Let’s Hope Nothing happens to Us, Gallery Madara, Estonia (2013); Variations, for Dessiner-Tracer, Galerie 36 bis, Tourcoing, France (2012); Contemporary approaches to art, melanithros Art Space, Athens, Greece (2011). Residencies include: Polymer, Estonia (2013) and Lille 3000, Noodles Room for ‘’l’Hôtel Europa’’, European Capital of Culture (2010).
Το Τεκτονικό Άστυ προτείνει την εξερεύνηση των υπόγειων δυνάμεων και συνθηκών που διαφωτίζουν καθημερινές οπτικές ενδείξεις και υπάρχουν σε αφθονία. Γεωλόγοι μελετούν τις κινήσεις περιφερόμενων τεκτονικών πλακών ώστε να κατανοήσουν τις παραμορφώσεις του φλοιού της γης. Αυτή η τεκτονική ρευστή κατάσταση είναι συγκρίσιμη με το σύγχρονο αστικό τοπίο και κοινωνικό περιβάλλον της Αθήνας, τα οποία διαρκώς αλλάζουν επηρεαζόμενα από αδιόρατους και μεταβαλλόμενους κοινωνικούς παράγοντες – πολιτική και οικονομία, προσωπικές και συλλογικές μνήμες – οι οποίοι δρουν μέσα σε ένα δίκτυο πολυσύνθετων διεθνών συνδέσμων.
Στο πλαίσιο του Τεκτονικό Άστυ οι Snehta residents Elliott Burns και Boris Lafargue αναλαμβάνουν την εξερεύνηση της μορφολογίας του αστικού τοπίου εξετάζοντας παράλληλα τις κρυμμένες συνθήκες και τους παράγοντες που επηρεάζουν τις τρέχουσες και μελλοντικές μορφές του τοπίου. Αποδεχόμενοι τη σκέψη ότι η Πόλη της Αθήνας βρίσκεται αυτή τη στιγμή σε μια αισθητική και κοινωνική αλληλουχία αλλαγών, οι Burns και Lafargue παρουσιάζουν οπτικές ερμηνείες της Πόλης σε μια προσπάθεια να προσφέρουν καινούργιους τρόπους διείσδυσης στη σύγχρονη εμπειρία του «κλεινόν άστυ».
Με έδρα το διαμέρισμα της Snehta στη Κυψέλη οι δύο καλλιτέχνες μετατρέπουν τις εγκαταστάσεις διαμονής τους σε προσωπικούς χώρους οπτικής και γλυπτικής προβολής. Εμπνευσμένοι από εικόνες και υλικά της καθημερινότητας, το εκθεσιακό σκηνικό φιλοξενεί έργα που παρουσιάζουν δύο ξεχωριστές προσωπικές αναγνώσεις του αστικού τοπίου της Αθήνας, της πολυδιάστατης ιστορίας της, τη δυνατότητά της να ξεπερνά πολιτισμικά σύνορα καθώς επίσης και τη θέση της ως πολιτισμικό υπομόχλιο.
Ο Elliott Burns παρουσιάζει μια σειρά από έργα που εξερευνούν τις δομές εκμετάλλευσης του τοπίου από Ανατολικούς και Δυτικούς σύγχρονούς πολιτισμούς. Βασιζόμενος στην έρευνα που ξεκίνησε στη Ταϋλάνδη το 2012 και την οποία συνέχισε στη Αθήνα, χρησιμοποιεί φωτογραφικές εικόνες, χαρακτικά σε αλουμίνιο και γλυπτικές συνθέσεις από ανεκτημένα υλικά ώστε να προκαλέσει οπτικούς συσχετισμούς μεταξύ Ανατολικών και Δυτικών εικόνων, υπαινισσόμενος με αυτόν τον τρόπο τη δυνατότητα ξεπέρασης εδραιωμένων πολιτισμικών αντιλήψεων.
O Boris Lafargue εξερευνεί την Αθήνα μέσω της ιδέας των poelitics η οποία υποστηρίζει μια ποιητική αντίληψη σε θέματα πολιτικού και κοινωνικού ενδιαφέροντος. Προσαρμόζοντας την Πόλη σε μια υπαίθρια αυλή, χρησιμοποιεί τα αισθητικά του κριτήρια ώστε να ερμηνεύσει παροδικές στιγμές από την καθημερινότητα. Εγκαταστάσεις, γλυπτά και σχέδια που δημιουργεί δρουν σαν κριτικές οπτικές πλατφόρμες που προωθούν ποιητικές και πολιτικές σκέψεις.
Βιογραφικα
Ο Elliott Burns, γεννήθηκε στο Στέβεναγκ του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου το 1989, και αυτή τη στιγμή ζει και εργάζεται στο Χερτφορτσάιρ του Η.Β. Σπούδασε Σχέδιο και Ζωγραφική στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών του Εδιμβούργου. Ενδεικτικές Εκθέσεις: The Road Less Travelled, House Gallery, Λονδίνο, Η.Β. Ο Boris Lafargue, γεννήθηκε στη Μπουλόν της Γαλλίας το 1984, και αυτή τη στιγμή ζει και εργάζεται μεταξύ Γαλλίας, Ελλάδας και Εσθονίας. Σπούδασε στη Καλών Τεχνών του Tourcoing και της Λιλ όπως και στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας.
