We traverse the space. We start filling the space with our own body. We use our senses to grasp the materiality of our surroundings. This is the first in a series of acts to make sense of the world we live in. This exhibition explores the conditions of a lived spatiality. Bringing together the concrete elements of our material surroundings as well as the mental images we produce to connect with the space where we reside, the works presented here study our relationship with space not as a fixed entity, but rather as a transient and fluid experience that involves breaks and fissures. 

All works encountered here imply a slight gesture; they request a displacement in space and time. Be it physical or mental, the disorientation of the subject presupposes a sheer movement in the way the perception of space is constructed; a shifting sense of place where the verticality of the structure and the horizontality of the human traversal within it appear as congruent counterparts of an ongoing process for the emergence of different modes of subjectivity. For the ways we connect with space is subject to our ever‐changing corporeal and conceptual reflections. In a sense, our relation to space is in a state of becoming; always coming into being, but never actually complete or coherent. 

 

Angharad Davies investigates the individual and collective body's interaction with architecture and how in turn space is defined by this in its/their absence. Working primarily with video, she manipulates photographs, combining them with text, to construct fictional narratives where our relation to space is perceived as a pendulum of mutually defining movements. The incompleteness of the structures observed meets a disturbed sense of the self; a discontinuity seen as an attribute that turns us toward the experience of the other. 

 

With clear references to Greek antiquity, Anastasia Pusch utilizes geometric shapes and symbols and builds sculptural interventions that question the way we relate to our past. Distorted images and fragments of ornaments are extracted from their original contexts and integrated into a new ambiance that reveals the ambivalence of the myth and its ambiguous role in the construction of social patterns while at the same time it challenges our sense of belonging. Hence, through their reappropriation, our material references to the past create the conditions for a new understanding. 

 

Blurring the boundaries between sculpture and photography, Emma Sandström combines found images and objects and creates installations onsite that are integrated into the space to raise our awareness of what is there and, thus, essentially affecting our perception. Through an experimentation with different materials, that includes a juxtaposition of industrial and natural elements, her semi‐finished structures emerge as a result of an often accidental process of assemblage that questions the functionality and materiality of the objects, while exploring their ever‐changing qualities as well as the diverse perspectives of a non‐static position. 

 

 

Curator: 

Myrto Katsimicha (b. 1991, Greece) is a curator based in Athens. She holds a BA in Media, Communication and Culture from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (2012) and a MA in Curating the Contemporary from London Metropolitan University and the Whitechapel Gallery (2014). Her latest curated exhibitions include Of Collectors room, Berlin (2014). She is currently working as Gallery Manager at State of Concept, Athens.

 

Artists: 

Angharad Davies (b. 1984, UK) lives and works in London. She earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2014) and her BA from Glasgow School of Art and the Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing (2008). Recent exhibitions include You Know That As Radiant, Devening Projects (Chicago, 2015); Primary Care, Julius Caesar (Chicago, 2015); OP MH OR ME, Kasteli 1663 (Santorini, 2015); Here, there and everywhere; Truth and Liveness, LNC Gallery, (Chicago, 2014). Alongside her art practice, her curatorial projects focus on video and performance.

 

Anastasia Pusch (b. 1988, Germany) lives and works in Wuppertal. She holds a degree in Fine Art from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (2015). Recent exhibitions include Heureka, Gallery Alte Fleischerei, Wuppertal (2015); EY Benefizauktion, Kunstsammlung NRW K20, Düsseldorf (2014); BoogieWoogie, SAAL 3, Düsseldorf (2013); Art‐Spektrum ‐ Die ganze Welt ist eine Bühne, Theatermuseum, Düsseldorf (2013). 

 

 

Emma Sandström (b. 1986, Sweden) lives and works in Glasgow. She earned her BA (Hons) Fine Art Photography from Glasgow School of Art (2015). Recent exhibitions include Near Here, Grace and Clark Fyfe Gallery, Glasgow (2016); Pingyao International Photography Festival, Pingyao (2015); Terra Alba, The White Space & The Cell, Glasgow (2015); The Book Show, CCA, Glasgow (2013). In 2015, she was awarded the Roger Ackling Prize for Photography.

Διασχίζουμε τον χώρο. Συμπληρώνουμε τον χώρο με το σώμα μας. Χρησιμοποιούμε τις αισθήσεις μας για να αφουγκραστούμε την υλική υπόσταση του περιβάλλοντός μας. Αυτή είναι η πρώτη σε μια σειρά δράσεων προκειμένου να κατανοήσουμε τον κόσμο μέσα στον οποίο ζούμε. Αυτή η έκθεση ερευνά τις συνθήκες μιας βιωμένης χωρικότητας. Συγκεντρώνοντας τα απτά στοιχεία του υλικού μας περιβάλλοντος αλλά και τις νοητικές εικόνες που παράγουμε για να συνδεθούμε με τον χώρο που κατοικούμε.

Όλα τα έργα που συναντώνται εδώ υπαινίσσονται μια λεπτή χειρονομία προτάσσοντας το αίτημα μιας μετατόπισης στον χώρο και τον χρόνο. Ο φυσικός ή διανοητικός αποπροσανατολισμός του υποκειμένου συνεπάγεται μια διακριτική μετακίνηση, μια αλλαγή στον τρόπο που κατασκευάζομαι την χωρική μας αντίληψη. Πρόκειται για μια μεταβαλλόμενη αντίληψη του χώρου όπου ο κάθετος δομικός άξονας και η οριζόντια διέλευση του ανθρώπινου στοιχείου προκύπτουν ως ισοδύναμα μέρη μιας αδιάκοπης διαδικασία από την οποία αναδύονται διαφορετικές μορφές της υποκειμενικότητας. Άλλωστε, οι σωματικές και διανοητικές μας αντανακλάσεις επηρεάζουν τον τρόπο που αντιλαμβανόμαστε τον χώρο. Κατά μία έννοια, η σχέση μας με τον χώρο γίνεται περισσότερο αντιληπτή ως μια κατάσταση σε εξέλιξη που δεν μπορεί να οριστεί με ακρίβεια, πληρότητα και απόλυτη συνοχή.

Η Μυρτώ Κατσιμίχα (γ. 1991, Ελλάδα) ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα. Είναι απόφοιτος του Τμήματος Επικοινωνίας, Μέσων και Πολιτισμού του Παντείου Πανεπιστημίου Κοινωνικών και Πολιτικών Επιστημών (2012) και του Μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου Επιμέλεια Σύγχρονης Τέχνης από το London Metropolitan University και την Whitechapel Gallery (Λονδίνο, 2014). Έχει επιμεληθεί πρόσφατα μια σειρά προβολών με τίτλο Of other places στην State of Concept, Αθήνα (2015) και την έκθεση EXOTICA and 4 other cases of the self σε συνεπιμέλεια με την Nina Borel και την Elisabetta Rabajoli στο me Collectors room, Βερολίνο (2014). Εργάζεται στην Αθήνα στην μη‐κερδοσκοπική γκαλερί State of Concept.
