Inspired by a child’s early creative stages of development, The First Circle signifies the creative impact the artists Becky Campbell, Rachael Cloughton, Stephanie Mann and Fiona McGurk made in response to their research time at Snehta in 2012.
The First Circle group exhibition serves as an opportunity for discussion and healthy reverie between the artists, the audience and Athens. This exhibition, showcasing new work made by the first four participating Snehta Residency artists, aims to explore the City from a fresh standpoint.
The works draw interest from current issues related to the City’s urban materiality, its physical and financial ruination, its history and contemporary rhythms of Athenian life. Each is expressed through a variety of creative practices including drawing, painting, performance, video work and sculpture.
The title The First Circle recapitulates the works of the first four artists and also commemorates the successful closing of the first phase of the Snehta Residency programme following its launch earlier this year.
Becky Campbell, having recently moved to Athens, has been making a series of objects which are enabling her to more deeply process the vast array of information she began exploring as a Snehta Resident earlier this year. She transforms and beautifies materials which contain a potential that she works to bring out by restructuring them: cutting, tearing and re-organising, or adorning them with watercolour, pencil or stitching.
Rachael Cloughton will present Until You Can’t Continue, a new series of film works produced for the Snehta Residency programme. Six actors at various stages in their career were invited to participate in the work. Each film records them responding to the request either to ‘laugh or cry until you can’t continue.’ The films document the duration of each performance, tracing the nuanced expressions of the actors and their attempt to sustain the performance as the work unfolds.
Stephanie Mann's work for the show is concerned with re-arranging and re-contextualising in real-time, composing a number of arrangements to construct a fluid mise-en-scène which will act as focal point twinned with the objects themselves. Athens will act as a sub-conscious visual source with its variants gathered as aesthetic ingredients.
Fiona McGurk’s multi-disciplinary work is informed by notions of accumulation, connection, interplay and context. Ideas are developed through a range of practical strategies; painting, collage, photography, objects. Engaging with Greece during an economic crisis as an artist-outsider provokes thought regarding ‘situation’ as a starting point, source of inspiration, hindrance or choice of subject matter to the process of researching and producing art. McGurk references the implicit influence of history on contemporary situations by using photographic documents held in boxes at the Benaki Museum archives.

Biographies
Becky Campbell was born in Bangour, Scotland in 1985, and now lives in Athens, Greece. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art between 2004-2010 for a BA(Hons) in Drawing & Painting and an MFA in Intermedia Art. She exhibited in: via, Parallax, Venice, Italy, 2011; mfm - World Edition, Wroclaw Press Centre, Wroclaw, Poland, 2011; Fragments, The Richard Demarco Archive Trust, Edinburgh, Scotland, 2011; Olavsokuframsyning, Faroe Islands, 2011; YELLOW, 2025 Kunst und Kultur e.V., Hamburg, Germany, 2010; Gaesahud, Konseptheimilid Sigmar, Reykjavik, Iceland, 2010; Deep Breaths, Govanhill Baths, Glasgow, Scotland, 2009. Rachael Cloughton was born in York in 1987. She studied at Leeds College of Art between 2006 and 2007 and at The University of Edinburgh from 2007 to 2012. Rachael was awarded the Barns-Graham Travel to Italy Award, 2012 and the Jenny Holzer Writing Prize, 2010.
Stephanie Mann is a Scottish artist. Her practice is an amalgamation of physical media, often phrased within the context of performance. After graduating in 2011 with a BA (Hons) in Sculpture from Edinburgh College of Art, Mann's work is rooted in sculptural foundations. She is concerned with the inherent properties of materials, objects and situations. She aims to re-arrange, re-purpose and re-contextualise them in playful, live collages, often resulting in varying physical end-points. Currently studying for an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice at Edinburgh College of Art, Mann was artist in residence for Snehta in July 2012.
Fiona McGurk, after completing a BSc (hons) Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, Fiona worked as a development chemist for 12 years before leaving to complete a BA (hons) Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 2012. She currently lives and works in Scotland. Fiona was awarded The Andrew Grant Travel Award (2010 and 2012) which supported a study trip to Munich in 2010 and will enable a forthcoming trip to Japan in 2013. She was recently awarded the RSA: New Contemporaries 2013 Award and will exhibit in the National Galleries of Scotland in April - May 2013. Selected group exhibitions include Berlin: Bridges and Barriers, Universität der Künst and London Art Book Fair 2012, Whitechapel Gallery. Her work has been selected to be shown in the Royal Scottish Academy, Society of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland exhibitions.
Ο τίτλος της έκθεσης «O Πρώτος Κύκλος», εμπνευσμένος από τις πρώτες παιδικές χειρονομίες, προβάλλει την αντίληψη των Βρετανίδων καλλιτεχνών Becky Campbell, Rachael Cloughton, Stephanie Mann και Fiona McGurk για την Αθήνα και τους ανθρώπους της μέσα από μία σειρά νέων δημιουργιών.
Οι καλλιτέχνες, κατά τη διάρκεια της συμμετοχής τους στο Snehta Residency, είχαν την ευκαιρία να ερευνήσουν σε βάθος τα θέματα που προξένησαν το ενδιαφέρον τους. Συγκεκριμένα, παρατηρούμε πως οι δουλειές τους αντλούν στοιχεία από τα υλικά και τη δομή της Αθήνας, από ιδέες σχετικές με τη φυσική αλλά και οικονομική ερείπωσή της, τη σύγχρονη ιστορία της και την Αθηναϊκή ζωή. Οι καλλιτέχνες προσεγγίζουν το θέμα τους ποικιλοτρόπως, χρησιμοποιώντας μέσα όπως το σχέδιο, τη ζωγραφική, τη φωτογραφία, το performance, το βίντεο και τη γλυπτική. Η έκθεση προσδοκεί να προκαλέσει συναισθήματα επαναπροσδιορισμού της Αθήνας και της καθημερινότητά της. Ο τίτλος «Ο πρώτος κύκλος» δεν συνοψίζει μονάχα την ολοκλήρωση των δουλειών των τεσσάρων πρώτων καλλιτεχνών αλλά γιορτάζει και την επιτυχή ολοκλήρωση του πρώτου κύκλου φιλοξενιών.
Στον “ Πρώτο Κύκλο” η McGurk, μέσα από το έργο της, αναφέρεται στην “έμμεση” επιρροή της ιστορίας στη σύγχρονη κοινωνία χρησιμοποιώντας το φωτογραφικό αρχείο του μουσείου Μπενάκη. Η Mann αντιλαμβάνεται την Αθήνα ως “υποσυνείδητη οπτική πηγή έμπνευσης”, συγκεντρώνοντας ερεθίσματα σαν συστατικά, τα οποία ονομάζει “συστατικά αισθητικής”. Το έργο της Cloughton φέρει τον τίτλο “Until You Can’t Continue” και αποτελεί μία νέα σειρά από έξι βίντεο. Στο κάθε βίντεο πρωταγωνιστούν ηθοποιοί που ανταποκρίνονται στο αίτημα της Cloughton “να γελάσουν η να κλάψουν μέχρι που δε θα μπορούν να συνεχίσουν” (‘laugh or cry until you can’t continue.'). Τα βίντεο, κατά τη διάρκεια της κάθε performance, φιλοδοξούν να αποδόσουν τις αποχρώσεις των εκφράσεων των ηθοποιών. Τέλος, η Becky Campbell, έχοντας πρόσφατα μετακομίσει στην Αθήνα, δημιουργεί μια νέα σειρά από αντικείμενα που της προσφέρουν τη δυνατότητα να επεξεργαστεί σε βάθος τις διάχυτες πληροφορίες που είχε ξεκινήσει να εξερευνά πριν λίγους μήνες ως πρώτη Snehta resident.

Η Becky Campbell γεννήθηκε στο Bangour της Σκωτίας το 1985, και σήμερα ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε στο Edinburgh College of Art από το 2004 έως το 2010 ολοκηρώνοντας το προπτυχιακό της σε Σχέδιο και Ζωγραφική και το Μεταπτυχιακό της σε 'Intermedia Art'.

Η Stephanie Mann είναι μια Σκοτσέζα καλλιτέχνης. Μετά την ολοκλήρωση των προπτυχιακών σπουδών της με ειδίκευση στη γλυπτική στη σχολή Καλών Τεχνών του Εδιμβούργου, η δουλειά της πηγάζει από γλυπτικές αναζητήσεις. Εμπνέεται και χρησιμοποιεί τις ιδιοσυστασίες των υλικών μετατράποντάς τα σε ζωντανή παράσταση, στοχεύοντας στην αναδιοργάνωση, τον επαναπροσδιορισμό και την επανεξέταση του πλαισίου τους, δράσεις οι οποίες συχνά οδηγούν στη δημιουργία ενός παιχνιδιάρικου και ζωντανού collage. Αυτή τη στιγμή ολοκληρώνει τις μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές της σε Σύγχρονες Εικαστικές Πρακτικές. Η Mann ήταν artist in residence για τη Snehta τον Ιούλιο του 2012.
Αφού η Fiona McGurk ολοκλήρωσε σπουδές Χημείας στο Πανεπιστήμιου του Strathclyde, εργάστηκε επί 12 χρόνια ως χημικός μέχρι που αποφάσισε να κάνει στροφή στην καριέρα της. Αποφοίτησε το 2012 από το Edinburgh College of Art στη Σκοτία με σπουδές πάνω στη ζωγραφική. Μένει και εργάζεται στην Σκοτία.
Η McGurk κέρδισε το βραβείο The Andrew Grant Travel Award (2010 and 2012), το οποίο της εξασφάλισε ένα ταξίδι μελέτης στο Μόναχο και το 2013 στην Ιαπωνία. Πρόσφατα της απονεμήθηκε το βραβείο RSA: New Contemporaries 2013. Στα πλαίσια αυτής της βράβευσης, πρόκειτα να εκθέσει στην Εθνική Πινακοθήκη της Σκοτίας τον Απρίλιο του 2013.
Έχει συμμετάσχει σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις με χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα στο Βερολίνο: Bridges και Barriers, Universität der Künst και Λονδίνο Art Book Fair 2012, Whitechapel Gallery.
