in ατhεns – Austrian Artist Residency offers four selected, Austrian-based, visual artists for the first time the opportunity to live and work in Athens during Spring/Summer 2017 as part of a funded residency program. The projects realized take conditions specific to the city as a starting point for artistic research, using various techniques and media to ask the question: what does it mean – or what could it mean – to live and work in ατhεns?
The exhibition presents works-in-progress and new works by Emanuel Ehgartner and Borjana Ventzislavova, who were artists-in-residence from April through May - under the curatorial advice of Eleni Michaelidi and Antonia Rahofer.
In his artistic practice, Emanuel Ehgartner (Vienna) draws upon the world of forms present in the urban space, inspired by his wanderings and findings through the city and its outskirts. Using strategies such as reproduction, reclamation and rearrangement, Ehgartner sets found and redefined objects into new and unexpected contexts.
Borjana Ventzislavova (Vienna/Sofia) works in the areas of photography, video, installations and new media. Her interest in the visual and its presentation have led her to explore themes such as mobility, marginalization and social cooperation—whereby she brings the all too often fine lines between presence and absence, power and powerlessness, authority and empowerment to the forefront of discussion.

Το project in ατhεns – Austrian Artist Residency προσφέρει σε τέσσερις επιλεγμένους εικαστικούς καλλιτέχνες, που κατάγονται από ή έχουν σχέση με την Αυστρία, τη δυνατότητα να ζήσουν και να εργαστούν στην Αθήνα την άνοιξη και το καλοκαίρι του 2017, στα πλαίσια ενός προγράμματος καλλιτεχνικής φιλοξενίας. Τα έργα που παρουσιάζονται δημιουργήθηκαν κατά την παραμονή και την έρευνά τους στην πόλη. Με αυτή τηναφετηρία, και με τη βοήθεια διάφορων τεχνικών και μέσων θέτουν το ερώτημα: τί σημαίνει - ή τί μπορεί να σημαίνει - να ζεις και να εργάζεσαι in ατhεns;
Στην έκθεση, την οποία έχουν επιμεληθεί η Ελένη Μιχαηλίδη και η Antonia Rahofer, προβάλλονται έργα-σε-εξέλιξη καθώς και νέα έργα του Emanuel Ehgartner και της Borjana Ventzislavova, φιλοξενούμενων του προγράμματος in ατhεns – Austrian Artist Residency από τον Απρίλιο μέχρι τον Μάιο.
Η καλλιτεχνική πρακτική του Emanuel Ehgartner (Βιέννη) βασίζεται στον κόσμο των μορφών οι οποίες είναι παρούσες στο αστικό περιβάλλον και εκκινεί από την κατεύθυνση των περιπλανήσεών του μέσα στην πόλη. Μέσω πρακτικών όπως η αναπαραγωγή και η ανακύκλωση, εντάσσει στα έργα του αντικείμενα και κατασκευές που εντοπίζει στην πόλη, επαναπροσδιορίζονταςκαι επανατοποθετώντας τα σε καινούργια, απρόσμενα πλαίσια.
Η Borjana Ventzislavova (Βιέννη/Σόφια) εργάζεται στους τομείς της φωτογραφίας, του βίντεο, των εγκαταστάσεων και των νέων μέσων. Το ενδιαφέρον της για την εικόνα και την αναπαράστασή της, την οδήγησε να διερευνήσει θέματα όπως η κινητικότητα, η περιθωριοποίηση και η κοινωνική συνεργασία – μέσω των οποίων αναδεικνύει τις, πολύ συχνά, λεπτές γραμμές μεταξύ παρουσίας και απουσίας, σχέσεων εξουσίας και τρόπων χειραφέτησης.
