As a launching pad for the exhibition “April is the cruellest month” constitutes the first verses one of the most ubiquitous and timeless poems of 20th century, that of The Waste Land from T. S. Eliot. He creates his own arid land, where he runs up against existential quests, expressing the psychological and emotional sequence of his ideas and images with elegiacal descriptions and clarity in detail. T. S. Eliot’s Waste Land, one could say, that consists an assembly of the fragments he collects around him, forming a study of the human soul. A space - a parallel spectrum - in which are dealing issues against the deterioration and decay of society and individuals.

In their two-month stay in Athens, artists Paige Davis, Elsa Henderson and Jingbo Zou are trying - each in their own way - to look through the influence of the subconscious for the visual experience of modern human sensitivity. Together with the residence artists, Thanos Makris will present his work, which deals with the works of the show.

Short Bios:

Jingbo Zou, graduated from University of the Arts London, London College of Communication. His work presents a fusion of traditional Chinese philosophy and Western contemporary art through photography and moving image, try to explore the balance between ancient and modern, tradition and contemporary, complexity and pureness.

Paige Davis lives and works in Santa Cruz, California, U.S.A. She graduated from University of California, Berkeley in December of 2017, where she studied Art Practice and American Studies. These two paths of study have allowed her to create one wide practice of seeing -- or noticing, listening -- and researching. Davis considers her work a physical and active thinking -- a multi-dimensional and often modular collage -- a sort of tactile research built on processes/processings and every day, quiet moments. The work feeds off of a question or a prompt, and continues to form, or become less of a form, as it moves around the prompt. Recent work centers around shadow -- literally and conceptually -- as she looks to shadow’s ability to represent both the invisible/the shadowed, as well as a place of becoming, of transformation of the invisible/the shadowed.

Elsa Henderson graduated from the Occidental College, Los Angeles,CA and the San Francisco Art Institute. She currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
Her work addresses the emotionality of everyday life, awakening feelings buried in our daily existence and constructing a visual iconography out of the objects that surround us by converting them into symbols directly connected to memory


Thanos Makris is a Visual Artist, Art Mediator, and Art Conservator. Currently, he is working on his dissertation for the Master in Visual Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts. His work is focused on the transformation and re-presentation of “found objects” such as motifs, porcelains, and stones, the interpretation of which results in a new artefact/palimpsest. Moreover, photography, through the use of mobile camera, works as a medium and as an extension of his hand.

Faidra Vasileiadou is a museologist and an independent art curator, based in Athens. She holds a master degree in museology and cultural management at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a bachelor degree in conservation of antiquites and works of art at Technological Institute of Athens. While finishing her MA internship in CACT, she participated in NEON’s first exhibition in Thessaloniki, “Flying over the Abyss”, as an assistant curator. Continuing her collaboration with NEON untill today, as an art mediator in several projects, she managed to elaborate communicational, organisational and diplomacy skills, working well as part of a team with a wide range of people. Concurrenlty with her association with NEON, in 2016 she received a curatorial fellowship from Schwarz Foundation in Art Space Pythagorion in Samos. As a result to this residency, she had the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Katerina Gregos (curator) and Katerina Zacharopoulou (director of educational program), gaining experience in terms of curatorial and educational aspects in contemporary art. After the curatorial residency, she moved to Athens, working as an idependent curator. Due to her proficient organisation and detail orientation, she supports artists by assisting in their reshearch, organising an exhibition or cultural event, configuring their public image (management of social media) and develop their artistic creation. Currently, she is working in MOMus – Alex Mylona. She is also mediating in the newest exhibition of Katerina Gregos in Athens Conservatory, sponsored by Schwarz Foundation. She is preparing a project in Athens School of Fine Arts with Katerina Zacharopoulou and also assisting in curating an exhibition in Vienna with Kostis Velonis which will take place in late April.

Σημείο εκκίνησης της έκθεσης “April is the cruellest month” αποτελούν οι πρώτοι στίχοι ενός από τα πιο διαδεδομένα και διαχρονικά ποιήματα του 20ού αιώνα, αυτό της Έρημης Χώρας του Έλιοτ. Ο ίδιος δημιουργεί την δική του άνυδρη χώρα, μέσα στην οποία έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με υπαρξιακές αναζητήσεις, εκφράζοντας την ψυχολογική και συναισθηματική αλληλουχία των ιδεών του και των εικόνων του με ελεγειακές περιγραφές και καθαρότητα σε λεπτομέρειες. Η Έρημη Χώρα του Έλιοτ, θα μπορούσε να πει κανείς πως, είναι μια συναρμολόγηση των θραυσμάτων που συλλέγει γύρω του με αποτέλεσμα να διαμορφώνει μια μελέτη της ανθρώπινης ψυχής. Ένας χώρος – ένα παράλληλο φάσμα – μέσα στο οποίο πραγματεύονται ζητήματα ενάντια στη φθορά και στη σήψη της κοινωνίας και των ατόμων.

Στην δίμηνη παραμονή τους στην Αθήνα, οι καλλιτέχνες Paige Davis, Elsa Henderson και Jingbo Zou επιχειρούν – ο καθένας με τον δικό του τρόπο – να αναζητήσουν εικαστικά, μέσω της επιρροής του υποσυνείδητου, την εμπειρία της σύγχρονης ευαισθησίας του ανθρώπου. Μαζί με τους φιλοξενούμενους καλλιτέχνες, ο Θάνος Μακρής θα παρουσιάσει έργο του, το οποίο συνδιαλέγεται με τα έργα της έκθεσης.

Σύντομα βιογραφικά

Ο Jingbo Zou, αποφοίτησε από το University of the Arts του Λονδίνου και το London College of Communication. Στο έργο του συναντάται η παραδοσιακή κινεζική φιλοσοφία με τη σύγχρονη τέχνη της δύσης μέσω της φωτογραφίας και της κινούμενης εικόνας. Το έργο χαρακτηρίζεται από την διερεύνηση της ισορροπίας ανάμεσα στην παράδοση και τη συγχρονικότητα καθώς και ανάμεσα στην πολυπλοκότητα και την αγνότητα.

Η Paige Davis ζει και εργάζεται στην Santa Cruz της Καλιφόρνια στις ΗΠΑ. Αποφοίτησε από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Καλιφόρνιας στο Μπέρκλεϊ τον Δεκέμβριο του 2017, όπου σπούδασε Art Practice και American Studies. Αυτά τα δύο μονοπάτια της μελέτης της επέτρεψαν να δημιουργήσει μια ευρεία πρακτική να βλέπει - ή να παρατηρεί, να ακούει - και να ερευνά. Η Paige θεωρεί το έργο της μια φυσική και ενεργή σκέψη - ένα πολυδιάστατο και συχνά αρθρωτό κολάζ - ένα είδος απτής έρευνας που βασίζεται σε διαδικασίες/επεξεργασίες και καθημερινές, ήσυχες στιγμές. Το έργο της τροφοδοτείται από μια ερώτηση ή μια προτροπή και συνεχίζει να παίρνει μορφή, ή να γίνεται λιγότερο από ένα σχήμα, καθώς κινείται γύρω από την προτροπή. Η πρόσφατη δουλειά της κινείται γύρω από τη σκιά- κυριολεκτικά και εννοιολογικά - όπως φαίνεται στην ικανότητα της σκιάς να αντιπροσωπεύει τόσο το αόρατο/σκιασμένο όσο και τον τόπο γέννησης μετασχηματισμού του αόρατου/σκιασμένου.

Η Elsa Henderson αποφοίτησε από το Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA και το San Francisco Art Institute. Σήμερα ζει και εργάζεται στο Βερολίνο, Γερμανία.
Το έργο της εξετάζει τον συναισθηματισμό στην καθημερινότητα, την αφύπνιση των συναισθημάτων που έχουν 'θαφτεί' μέσα στην καθημερινή μας ύπαρξη και την κατασκευή μιας οπτικής εικονογραφίας με θέμα τα αντικείμενα που μας περιβάλλουν μετατρέποντάς τα σε σύμβολα άμεσα συνδεόμενα με τη μνήμη.

Ο Θάνος Μακρής είναι Visual Artist, Art Mediator και Συντηρητής Έργων Τέχνης. Αυτό τη περίοδο εργάζεται πάνω στη Διπλωματική του εργασία, στο πλαίσιο ολοκλήρωσης του Μεταπτυχιακού Προγράμματος Εικαστικών Τεχνών της Ανώτατης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών. Η καλλιτεχνική του πρακτική εστιάζει στη μεταμόρφωση και την επανερμηνεία "found objects", όπως διακοσμητικά μοτίβα, πορσελάνες και λίθους, των οποίων η ερμηνευτική προσέγγιση συνθέτει ένα νέο εύρημα / παλίμψηστο. Επιπροσθέτως, η φωτογραφία μέσω κινητού τηλεφώνου χρησιμοποιείται αφενός ως μέσο και αφετέρου ως προέκταση του χεριού του.

Η Φαίδρα Βασιλειάδου είναι μουσειολόγος και επιμελήτρια τέχνης, με έδρα την πόλη της Αθήνας. Οι βασικές της σπουδές έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί στο τμήμα Συντήρησης Αρχαιοτήτων και Έργων Τέχνης, στη Σχολή Γραφικών και Καλλιτεχνικών Σπουδών του ΑΤΕΙ Αθηνών και οι μεταπτυχιακές στο διαπανεπιστημιακό πρόγραμμα μεταπτυχιακών σπουδών «Μουσειολογία και Διαχείριση Πολιτισμού» στην Πολυτεχνική Σχολή του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης. Ολοκληρώνοντας την πρακτική της άσκηση στο Κέντρο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Θεσσαλονίκης, ξεκίνησε την συνεργασία της με τον ΝΕΟΝ, ως art mediator. Επιπροσθέτως, η επιμελητική υποτροφία που έλαβε το 2016 από το Schwarz Foundation, σε συνεργασία με την Κατερίνα Γρέγου ως επιμελήτρια και την Κατερίνα Ζαχαροπούλου ως υπεύθυνη των εκπαιδευτικών προγραμμάτων, διαμόρφωσε τις επιμελητικές της γνώσεις και εξέλιξε τις οργανωτικές της δεξιότητες. Ολοκληρώνοντας την επιμελητική υποτροφία, μετακομίζει στην Αθήνα, όπου ζει και εργάζεται έως και σήμερα ως ανεξάρτητη επιμελήτρια. Παράλληλα με τις εκθέσεις του ΝΕΟΝ που συμμετείχε, συνεργάζεται σε σταθερή βάση με τον Κωστή Βελώνη ως βοηθός επιμελήτρια. Τη στιγμή αυτή, εργάζεται στο ΜΟΜus –Μουσείο Άλεξ Μυλωνά. Επιπλέον, συμμετέχει στην έκθεση του Schwarz Foundation στο Ωδείο Αθηνών σε επιμέλεια Κατερίνας Γρέγου, ως art mediator. Ταυτόχρονα, ετοιμάζει ένα έργο με την Κατερίνα Ζαχαροπούλου στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών, ενώ τέλος Απριλίου οργανώνει μια έκθεση στην Βιέννη με τον Κωστή Βελώνη.
