Το Snehta residency παρουσιάζει την σόλο έκθεση “Aliki” απο την Ισραηλινή εικαστικό Yana Rotner απο το Τελ Αβίβ και τωρινή ρεζιντεντ του Snehta.
Στην δουλειά της η Yana Rotner δημιουργεί ένα οργανικό χώρο μέσα απο την ενσωμάτωση εικόνων και γλυπτικών αντικειμένων. Αυτή η σύνταξη τονίζει τη σχέση μεταξυ των υλικών και των ιδαίτερων αξιών τους. Η καλλιτέχνης οικιοποιείται στοιχεία απο το Σινεμά και τα προσαρτίζει σε ένα ευρύτερο διαλογο σύγχρονων προβληματισμών και φιλοσογικών τάσεων. Η καλλιτέχνης ενδιαφέρεται για τους τρόπους παρουσίασης και προβολής, έτσι συλαμβάνει και χησιμοποιεί την βιτρίνα ως αντικείμενο που αντικαθρεπτιζει τα χαρακτηριστικά της κουλτούρας που παρουσιάσει η αναδεικνύει.
Κατα τη διάρκεια παραμονής της στην Αθήνα, η Yana Rotner επισκέφτηκε μουσεια της Αθήνας και ιστορικούς χώρους καταλήγοντας στο να εστιάσει το ενδιαφέρον της στο χρυσό ελλειπτικό διάδημα απο τον τάφο μιας γυναίκας (1.500 π.χ) που παρουσιάζεται σε βιτρίνα του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου. Το σχήμα του χρυσού διαδήματος της θύμισε τις βασεις για τις σημαίες που χρησιμοποιούνται σε πολιτικές συναντήσεις. Αυτή η σύνδεση των δύο αντικειμένων της δημιουργησε ερωτήματα σχετικά με την εθνική και πολιτική ταυτότητα των δυο χωρών (Ισραήλ, Ελλάδα) μέσα στα γεωγραφικά πλάισια της ανατολικής Μεσογείου και την κατ’επέκταση ιστορική και κοινωνική σύνδεση τους που προσδιορίζονται σε ένα μεγάλο βαθμό απο το παρελθόν τους.
Η βαση για τις σημαίες χρωματίζει τον ρόλο μιας σκηνής, η παρουσίασης. Πολλαπλές εθνικές ταυτότητες αναγνωρίζονται απο τη τοποθέτηση τη σημαίας τους σε μια βάση σαν και αυτή… Τα φορμαλιστικά στοιχεία αυτων των παράξενων αντικειμένων τράβηξαν την προσοχή της Rotner. Τοποθετημένα σε βάθρα και κενά δίχως σημαίες ο θεατής δεν αντιλαμβάνεται άμεσα τη χρήση τους και έτσι τα αντικείμενα περνάνε στην σφαίρα του ανοίκειου και του παράξενου.
Βαστώντας την ελπίδα, τα όνειρα και τις επιθυμίες ενός παλιού Ελληνικού ένδοξου έθνούς, η εθνική ηθοποιός Αλίκη Βουγιουκλάκη συνεχίζει να συναρπάζει τους θεατές της τηλεόρασης και του παλιού σινεμά. Χιλιοπαιγμένη μέσα στα σπίτια ελληνικών οικογενειών και αιθουσών σινεμά έτσι όπως και η ιδια η Yana Rotner βίωσε μέσα στο δωμάτιο ξενοδοχείου που νοίκιασε για λίγες ημέρες στην Ύδρα. Το έργο που δημιούργησε και επονόμασε Αλίκη γράφει στα Εβραϊκά πάνω σε τοίχο και σχεδιασμένο με βάση το λογότυπο της διασωζουσας επιγραφής ενός παλιού σινεμά στην Κυψέλη. Μια υπογραφή είναι μοναδική και δεν μπορεί να επαναληφθει. Πιο πέρα, στον χώρο εκθεσης της δουελιάς της οι επιστκέπτες θα έρθουν σε επαφή με μια ηχητική εγκατάσταση της εικαστικού σε συνεργασία με τη μουσικό Ειρήνη Λυσσάρη που είναι βασισμένη σε ένα ηχητικό κολάζ συνεντεύξεων της Αλίκης Βουγιουκλάκη απο το 1990. Η Rotner και η Λυσσάρη φέρνουν στην επιφάνεια ένα κομμάτι της χρυσής εποχής Ελλάδας πριν την κρίση.
Η Yana Rotner γεννηθηκε το 1988 στο Bendery, Μολδοβίας. Ζει και εργάζεται στο Τελ Αβίβ, Ισραήλ. Σπούδασε φωτογραφία στο Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, BA. Ιερουσαλήμ, Ισραήλ. και έκανε το μεταπτυχιακό της στο Interdisciplinary Program στο Tel Aviv University, Ισραήλ. Την ίδια περίοδο έκανε ανταλλαγή στο Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig, Γερμανίας. Η Rotner έχει εκθέσει δουλειά της σε πολλές χώρες μεταξύ άλλων στις: Kunstverein Nurnberg, Νιρεμβεργη, Γερμανίας, Indie Gallery, Τελαβίβ, Ισραήλ, Binyamin Gallery, Τελ Αβίβ, Ισραήλ, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Λειψία, Γερμανίας. Εχει επιμεληθεί και συμμετάσχει στο "Nine Derivatives" στο τμήμα φωτογραφίας της Bezalel Academy of Art Ιερουσαλήμ, Ισραήλ. Snehta Residency presents the solo exhibition “Aliki” by Yana Rotner, an artist based in Tel-Aviv, Israel, who has been an artist-in-residence during September and October 2016.
In her works Yana Rotner creates an organic space through the embodiment of images and sculptural objects into a syntax that emphasizes the relationship between materials and their substance. The artist uses references from the history of cinema in dialogue with contemporary theoretical and philosophical discourse. Rotner is interested in different aspects of how things are represented, and conceives the vitrine as a conceptual construction of how culture is displayed.
During her time in Athens, Rotner came across an ancient gold elliptical diadem from the “grave of a woman” (1500 BC) shown in a glass vitrine at the National Archaeological Museum. This shape of the golden crown reminded her of an object for holding flags she had already imagined working with back in Israel. This raised questions concerning her national identity within a Mediterranean country and its complex: the dialogue between two places being driven by their past towards the future. Furthermore, the act of recognizing an image and relating it to previous experiences is played on by Rotner throughout the exhibition.
The flag stand as an object defines the role of a stage, a display. Multiple national identities are acknowledged by the placement of various flags within these stands, however in Rotner’s “Flag Stand” three of these stands, custom-made in Athens, have been left empty. Therefore the viewer is pushed to focus on the form of these supporting structures as objects and signifiers in themselves rather than a passive vessel. The organic elements of these bizarre objects come to the fore in Rotner’s presentation: elevated on plinths the viewer may consider them as a void of their function. Furthermore the form itself is redolent of a sprouting plant – though made of shining metal - purposely formed to hold the literal and metaphorical weight of the countries represented by the flags it is designed to bear.
Bearing the hopes, dreams and desires of a nation, Greece’s national sweetheart Aliki Vougiouklaki continues to gaze at TV viewers through repeats of her films in households throughout Greece, as Rotner experienced during her stay in a hotel room on Hydra Island: immediately she understood it was a national star on the screen. The piece “Αλίκη” is titled in Greek, scrawled across a wall in Hebrew letters designed according to a movie-poster cinema font in Kypsei. A signature is formed by an individual private name that cannot be changed. In the upper gallery there is a sound work created in collaboration with the musician Eirini Lyssari. Through collaging phrases from interviews with Vougliaklaki from the 90s, Rotner and Lyssari have formed an echo of the aspirations of Greece pre-crisis.
Yana Rotner was born in 1988 in Bendery, Moldova. She lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel. She studied for a BA in the Department of Photography at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel, and her MA in the Interdisciplinary Program in the Arts at Tel Aviv University, Israel, during which time she was an exchange student at the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig, Germany. Rotner has exhibited internationally at venues including: Kunstverein Nurnberg, Nurnberg, Germany, Indie Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel, Binyamin Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig, Germany. She curated and presented in "Nine Derivatives" in the Photography Department of Bezalel Academy of Art Jerusalem, Israel. Her work is in the museum collection of Islamic Art Jerusalem.
