Snehta Residency is pleased to present a show by current artists-in-residence Alexandra Brunt and the artists’ duo Άθεοι, composed by Theia Connell and Theodoulos Polyviou. In the exhibition, the artists will present the work they produced during their residency and research in Athens.
Alexandra Brunt works with performance, sound, object and text, making work that responds to states of tension, agency and the status of the language. During her residency with Snehta in Athens, Brunt has developed a series of works elevating the performative quality of text, sound and image. Transcribed through her body each work reiterates different behaviours and movements to shift and form new meaning. Her artworks create visceral compositions of movement, sound, and gesture. Through these materials and imagery, she creates a dialogue bordering between intimacy and exposure.
Theia Connell and Theodoulos Polyviou met at Snehta Residency and started working together forming the group Άθεοι, an anagram of their names. Through their collaboration, they research ways of reversing hegemonic practices in terms of gender and artistic production. In the practice of Άθεοι, sexual innuendo, humour, and ambiguity meet site-specific enquiry. Άθεοι take objects from public infrastructure, museological displays, and shopfronts, and playfully transform them into hybrid objects. These objects seek to be redefined, challenging the space they are in and the normative division of time in past – present and future.

Η Snehta Residency παρουσιάζει την έκθεση της καλλιτέχνιδας Alexandra Brunt και της καλλιτεχνικής ομάδας Άθεοι η οποία αποτελείται από την Theia Connell και τον Θεόδουλο Πολυβίου. Στην έκθεση παρουσιάζονται τα έργα που δημιούργησαν οι καλλιτέχνες κατά την διαμονή και έρευνά τους στην Αθήνα.
Η πρακτική της Alexandra Brunt περιλαμβάνει performance, ήχο, αντικείμενα και κείμενο δημιουργώντας έργα τα οποία διαπραγματεύονται καταστάσεις έντασης και διαμεσολάβησης καθώς και τη γλωσσική συνθήκη. Κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής της στην Αθήνα η Brunt ανέπτυξε μια σειρά έργων που εξερευνούν την ‘performative’ ποιότητα του κειμένου, του ήχου και της εικόνας. Τα έργα της αποτελούν εσωτερικές συνθέσεις κίνησης, ήχου και χειρονομιών. Μέσα από μια μεταγραφή στο σώμα της, κάθε έργο επαναλαμβάνει διαφορετικές συμπεριφορές και κινήσεις δημιουργώντας νέες σημασίες. Μέσα από υλικά και εικόνες δημιουργεί ένα διάλογο που ακροβατεί ανάμεσα στην προσωπική σχέση οικειότητας και την δημόσια έκθεση.
H Theia Connell και ο Θεόδουλος Πολυβίου γνωρίστηκαν στη Snehta και ξεκίνησαν να δουλεύουν μαζί σχηματίζοντας την ομάδα Άθεοι, το όνομα της οποίας προκύπτει από τον αναγραμματισμό των ονομάτων τους. Μέσα από τη συνεργασία τους αναζητούν τρόπους ανατροπής των ηγεμονικών πρακτικών σε ό,τι αφορά το φύλο και την καλλιτεχνική παραγωγή. Στην πρακτική τους τα σεξουαλικά υπονοούμενα, το χιούμορ και η αμφισημία συναντώνται με την έρευνα για το χώρο. Οι Άθεοι παίρνουν αντικείμενα από τη δημόσια υποδομή, τη μουσειολογική παρουσίαση και τις βιτρίνες καταστημάτων και τα μεταμορφώνουν με μια διάσταση παιχνιδιού σε υβριδικά αντικείμενα. Τα αντικείμενα αυτά καλούν σε έναν επαναπροσδιορισμό τόσο των ίδιων όσο και του χώρου στον οποίο βρίσκονται ενώ παράλληλα επανεξετάζουν τη δόμηση και το διαχωρισμό του χρόνου σε παρελθόν – παρόν και μέλλον.
